Gaming – The New Spectator Sport

Competitive gaming has been on the rise and shows no signs of plateauing. The 208 billion dollar industry has now broadened to provide forums to turn E-sport into a spectator sport. Spectator mode viewership is extremely popular for games like League of Legends, God Of War and StarCraft. Players are able to view their game, after or while playing it, with their contenders and can share the video with other gamers or friends for viewing. A few sites have also begun live streaming of such videos.

Twitch TV seems to have hit an all time high with the gamers. Barely a year old, the website already has more than 17 million viewers, most of them being gamers who want to broadcast their skills to the world. Blowing all domestic conceptions to smithereens, Twitch TV with Alienware has now launched gaming scholarships. Should one expect a radical paradigm shift and parents to come up to their children and tell them to game more often? God bless liberty, I sure hope this happens.

The success of Twitch.TV, Gamestreams, WeGame and the like is dependant mainly on the rising interest viewers have to see the videos uploaded by professional gamers. Some do it to pick up tips and knacks; others do it for the sheer visual pleasure of the combination of fantastic graphics and skill and watching a game guru in action.

So what does one want out of gaming? When asked of gaming legends like Peter Ludlow and Billy Mitchell, the answer is simple. Gamers want fame and recognition. Off late gaming seems to have become a mainstream competitive talent category. Gaming is being explored as a means to earn a living. It has transgressed to a way of life, it’s taken over, shoved and fought for its own niche and now, it is fast becoming an exciting profession of our age. And that is what we shall run through in my next post.

If you are a Twitch.TV fan, or a gamer, take a moment and post your opinion. Also, do share this blog with your gamer friends. Peace.
